Hi everyone at Georgia State University Anthropology Department!
My name is Joseph Wilson and I am an anthropologist and historian (and member of both the American Anthropological Association and the Association for Feminist Anthropology) who graduated from Southern Illinois University in 2014 with BA's in anthropology and
history and a minor in Native American Studies. I've spent the last eight years conducting ethnographic research of international women's sports including publishing eight ethnographies and contributing on a 2-volume textbook. After years of work as a freelance
anthropologist, I want to give back to the anthropology and history communities by helping the next generation of anthropologists and historians learn how to transition from classroom learning to field research.
I'm starting a program this summer that will consist of 2-3 week trips during which participants will learn how to conduct field research on a budget, learn how to effectively communicate with local communities, and learn how to make a career out of field work.
This summer's trips include a road trip across the American West retracing the journey of Lewis & Clark with lessons on the impact of American Westward Expansion in indigenous communities and on Western US ecology; a trip to Italy to learn about the impact
of Late Medieval politics, religion, and art on the Italian Renaissance; a trip to Greece to learn about the impact of Ancient Greek philosophy, mythology, and politics on contemporary Greek culture; and a trip to the Bahamas to learn about the lasting legacy
of the Transatlantic Slave Trade and the Golden Age of Piracy.
If you have any students in the anthropology department who may be interested in participating in any of these trips, please feel free to pass on our contact info to answer any more questions anyone may have. I would also love the chance to meet with students
(via video call because I'm currently on a trip to circumnavigate the globe). I look forward to hearing from you all, and wish the graduating class a smooth final semester.
Joseph C Wilson
