Hello CSc Seniors and recently graduated students, Please see the message below from the GSU Robinson College of Business regarding a sprint: Dear GSU CS Students: I’m writing to let you know about an opportunity to particulate in a co-curricular opportunity sponsored by GSU's Robinson College of Business Department of Risk Management and Insurance. This opportunity is called a "sprint" project. Sprints are semester-long projects where a team of graduate students works with a faculty advisor to gain insight on a business problem brought to us by a company. While these projects have historically been staffed by students from the Robinson College of Business, I'm excited to let you know that a selected number of highly-qualified CS students are being invited to participate. I'm writing to you to gauge interest in two sprint opportunities for Fall 2022 that can help you gain hands-on experience and sharpen your programming, analytical and communication skills. Description of sprint #1 - Telenav: Telenav is a tech company headquartered in Santa Clara, CA that would like to launch a novel insurance telematics product. * In Fall 2021 and under the direction of Prof. Akcin, a team of GSU grad students assisted Telenav in the development of a predictive engine that computes a risk score for every route in CA based on driver behaviors exhibited along that route. * Then in Spring 2022 and under the supervision of Prof. Orfanos, a team of GSU grad students assisted Telenav in building a pricing engine that computes the probability of an accident and expected loss for every route in CA based on suitable accident data from 2011-21. The plan for Fall 2022 is to integrate the above into a single product that can perform superior risk classification and pricing. Implementation details will be influenced by the business direction that Telenav chooses to take and will be clarified as more progress is made. Description of sprint #2 - BDO: The Valuation & Capital Market Analysis group at BDO USA LLP, is developing a pricing engine which will span across both exchange securities as well as derivative products. The objective of this tool will be to provide accurate and timely results across the universe of level 1,2 and 3 assets/liabilities that are held for audit clients as well as external fair value opinions. The plan for Fall 2022 is to work under Prof. Mazaheri to: * Aggregate external vendor pricing data which will flow through or be stored in a pricing data warehouse. * Develop the Exchange Securities pricing engine and OTC derivative pricing engine. Timeline: Team selection: Sunday, July 1, 2022 Start: August 29, 2022 End of 1st phase: September 26, 2022 End of 2nd phase: October 24, 2022 End of 3rd phase: November 21, 2022 Finish: December 5, 2022 Requirements: * These opportunities are for graduate students in the CS, QRAM or MAS programs (including those in dual programs with MSA). * Coding knowledge in Python (or R) is essential. * For CS students, ability to build systems to scrape, import, and integrate data are valuable, as well as the ability to build user interfaces that display data output by the project. * Strong communication and presentation skills are also important. Expectations: Each sprint is a co-curricular project, meaning that you will not receive course credit for participation. You should expect to devote 15-20 hours per week to the project throughout the Fall semester. You can participate in at most one sprint at a time. Students can elect to receive a GRA (including a $2,000 stipend and “full” tuition waiver consistent with GRA rules) for their successful participation in a sprint. Students can only receive one GRA per term. As a result, students who have another GRA can still participate in a sprint, but cannot receive a second GRA for doing so. DEADLINE: In order to be considered, you need to enter your information using the link below by 5pm on Sunday, June 15.
