The departmental colloquium/seminar series will kick off November 1, 2019. The department will host up to 10 seminars from now until the end of March. The first seminar will be held this Friday, November 1, 2019, at 11 AM, 755 25PP. Dr. Murray Patterson from UniversitÓ degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca, Milano, Italy, will present a talk "Algorithmic and artificial intelligence approaches to the latest bioinformatics challenges". Abstract: This talk focuses on the two major themes of my research: evolutionary molecular biology, and high-throughput sequencing. On the evolutionary biology side, I developed a framework called "DeCoLT" (pbil.univ-lyon1.fr/software/DeCoLT<https://nam03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fpbil.univ-lyon1.fr%2Fsoftware%2FDeCoLT&data=02%7C01%7Ctdudley%40gsu.edu%7Cc8d8dd4186b34ada9c7308d75bf5d148%7C515ad73d8d5e4169895c9789dc742a70%7C0%7C0%7C637078983650542157&sdata=FEUNW48l20xrfDzc7bpcDP2PRN8l%2Fu6bXdKc45z%2Bttg%3D&reserved=0>) for inferring ancestral gene rearrangement scenarios --- providing insight into the co-evolution of pathogens with their hosts, allowing a deeper historical and evolutionary understanding of infectious diseases. I then complemented this more genomics-oriented study with a study of metabolic function, in terms of the correlated evolution of genomic products such as proteins and enzymes. On the sequencing side, I developed "WhatsHap" (whatshap.readthedocs.io<https://nam03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwhatshap.readthedocs.io%2F&data=02%7C01%7Ctdudley%40gsu.edu%7Cc8d8dd4186b34ada9c7308d75bf5d148%7C515ad73d8d5e4169895c9789dc742a70%7C0%7C0%7C637078983650552149&sdata=eMSZTqE3i8BUBlfYjdBaDLNGnrKDcGFAL85%2FWsXqrKA%3D&reserved=0>): a software suite for assembling haplotypes from long-read DNA sequencing data --- something which sheds light on factors for determining human vulnerability to certain diseases. Because of its effectiveness, but also its ease of use, WhatsHap is used by Pacific BioSciences (PacBio) for benchmarking their sequencing technologies. Most recently, combining these two themes, I study and develop (phylogenetic) models of cancerous tumor progression from single-cell sequencing data.
