A pre-assessment checklist is available for PIs and laboratory personnel on the URSA website<http://ursa.research.gsu.edu/ursa/compliance/res/lab-safety/>. The Radiation Protection Committee at GSU has recently implemented a new Laser Safety Program on campus. The committee would like to register all new and existing class 3B and 4 lasers as required by the Georgia Department of Community Health. If you have Class 3B or 4 lasers on campus, plan to obtain these lasers, or are unsure of the class of your lasers, please contact a Radiation Safety Officer at [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> to have them registered. New biohazardous waste procedures for incineration boxes are now in place. DO NOT drop boxes off for pick-up. Instead, please complete a request for biohazardous waste pick-up through Chematix on the URSA website<http://ursa.research.gsu.edu/ursa/compliance/res/chemical-safety/> or by emailing [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>. Many expressed an interest in getting more information about this timely and relevant topic. July 22nd (2016) is the deadline for this round of CDC-GSU Seed Grant proposals for two-year projects to begin this October. URSA Covers Publication Fees in BioMed Central and Hindawi Journals Full-time GSU faculty and research staff, postdocs, and doctoral graduate students who co-author a manuscript with a full-time GSU faculty, may apply for coverage of publication fees to any BioMed Central open access journal. The application form and instructions are available on the URSA website<http://ursa.research.gsu.edu/files/2013/07/Open-Access-Publishing-Initiative-application.docx>. GSU also has an institutional membership with Hindawi Publishing Corp. Any GSU investigator may submit manuscripts for publication to any Hindawi<http://www.hindawi.com/institutions/gsu.edu/> open access journal under the GSU membership at no charge. You must request at the time of submission to credit any publication costs to the GSU institutional membership. What's So Important About Personnel Effort Reporting? As a recipient of federal funding GSU is required to comply with the Office of Management and Budget Circular Uniform Administrative Requirements, Cost Principles, and Audit Requirements for Federal Awards ("Uniform Guidance") as well as other federal requirements for certifying effort expended on sponsored awards. GSU requires all individuals who receive federal sponsored funding to comply with University policies and sponsoring agency regulations regarding the proposing, charging, and reporting of effort on those awards. University faculty and staff are expected to charge their time to sponsored awards commensurate with the committed effort expended on all activities they perform. The University’s practice is to utilize an after-the-fact effort reporting system to certify that salaries charged or cost shared to sponsored awards are reasonable and consistent with the work performed. The individual’s effort is first assigned to specific awards in the payroll system based on anticipated activities. Actual effort expended on each project is certified by a responsible person with suitable means of verification that the work was performed, generally the principal investigator, at the end of specified reporting periods. The effort certification should be a reasonable estimate of how time was expended.
