Message from the Vice President

As you know, annual research awards received in fiscal year 2015 at Georgia State exceeded the $100 million milestone for the first time in our university’s history, and we are on track to surpass last year’s total research awards—a testament to our incredible faculty and staff.

We have created two new research centers—the Mark Chaffin Center for Healthy Development and the Center for Molecular and Translational Medicine—dedicated to health and medicine. Researchers in the centers have already procured more than $55 million in external research funding

We are part of the i6 Challenge Grant, along with Georgia Tech, to develop innovation-led economic development activities in several underserved areas in Georgia. Specifically, we will work with and engage the disadvantaged population of Metro Atlanta in the entrepreneurial process.

We are also a member of the MetroLab Network, a White House supported, multi-disciplinary research and educational initiative to research, design, develop and evaluate solutions to challenges affecting the economy and quality of life in metropolitan areas.

As a Tier One research university, the Office of the Vice President for Research and Economic Development is continuing to advance the Georgia State research agenda, invest in new initiatives, expand research support services, and boost our commercialization potential. None of this would be possible without the talent and support of each and everyone of you.

News Briefs

IRB drop-in help for faculty only

  *   When: Every Wednesday from 3:15 – 5:15 p.m. January 13 - April 27, 2016
  *   Where: Dahlberg Hall, Suite 217
  *   Appointments: Faculty will be served on a first-come first-served basis during these times (Graduate students are welcomed to come with a faculty mentor, but not alone)

The Office of Human Research Protection offers personalized, one-on-one guidance for investigators provided by the Georgia State University IRB. Help is provided with responses to revisions, formulating complicated human subject protection plans, and international research protocols.


Internal grants upcoming deadlines
The Office of the Vice President for Research & Economic Development sponsors internal grants to promote new, innovative research and scholarly activity by tenured and pre-tenured faculty at GSU, host conferences at GSU, and support doctoral dissertation research. Details about these programs are available on the Internal Grants Program<http://ursa.research.gsu.edu/ursa/funding/funding-opportunities/internal-grant-program/> webpage. Upcoming deadline:

  *   Research Initiation grants: Applications opened October 19th and are due January 12, 2016
  *   Scholarly Support grants (new pre- and post-tenure applications): Applications opened October 19th and are due January 12, 2016
  *   Conference grants: Applications reopen March 1st and are due April 15th for conferences scheduled to occur between July 1 and December 31, 2016

Funds for publishing in BMC and Hindawi journals available
URSA has limited funds to pay for publication fees in Biomed Central open access journals. Full-time GSU faculty, or GSU research staff and doctoral graduate students who are publishing with a full-time GSU faculty, may apply. GSU also has an institutional membership with Hindawi Publishing Corp. Any GSU investigator may submit manuscripts for publication to any Hindawi journal under the GSU membership at no charge. You must request at the time of submission to credit any publication costs to the GSU institutional membership.


Information Technology solutions for researchers
The Research Solutions unit provides solutions to support Georgia State’s research growth and economic impact. We offer services to support cloud computing, cyberinfrastructure, compliance solutions, and high-performance computing.
