Introduction to Purification: A Class for Women

What are the minimum steps that one must perform for wudu (say if one is
pressed for time at work or school)? Can one touch a copy of the Quran
without wudu? How does one know for sure when one’s menstrual period is
over? What is the purpose of the rules of purification (*taharah*) anyway?

Join us this weekend for a day and a half program that will cover the
basics on the rulings of purification. This class will provide an outline of
the main rulings related to *taharah*, with a special focus on women’s
issues. Each session will build on the previous, so attendance at all
sessions is strongly recommended. As Muslims are required by the Shari`ah to
learn the legal rulings of *taharah* when they are approaching puberty, this
class is open to all women, young (as young as 8-9) and old.

Instructor: Fareeha Khan

*Dr. Fareeha Khan* will be starting as assistant professor of Islamic
Studies at Willamette University in Fall 2009. She received her Ph.D. in
Near Eastern Studies (Islamic Studies) from the University of Michigan in
the spring of 2008, and was assistant professor of Islam at Georgia State
University during the 2008-2009 academic year. Fareeha has worked on
traditionalist Muslim scholars’ approach to Shari‘ah reform in the modern
period, with a particular focus on the legal work of Deobandi ‘ulama in
pre-Partition India on the issue of women’s right to divorce. Fareeha has
been blessed to have been able to spend time with numerous 'ulama from
around the Muslim world. She has studied under Shaykh Faraz Rabbani, Ustadha
Hedaya Hartford, Shaykh Muhammad al-Ya'qubi, Shaykh Husain Abdul Sattar, and
others. Fareeha has taught *fiqh* of *taharah* and *salah* (with the
permission of Shaykh Faraz Rabbani) in numerous cities across the United
States. She has also lectured on the topic of women in Islam at various
venues and hopes to continue to benefit from the wisdom of the 'ulama by
continuing her pursuit of sacred knowledge. Fareeha was born and raised in
Chicago, Illinois and is of Indian and Pakistani descent. She is married and
will be moving to Washington state (near Portland, Oregon) in May 2009.
