Georgia State Student Chapter of WeCAn

Who we are:

WeCAn (Women Computing in Atlanta) is an organization to support women
(undergraduate, graduate, or faculty) in computer science programs in
the Atlanta area. It was started by two Ph.D. students from Georgia
State University, Mary Hudachek-Buswell and Stefanie Markham. They felt
that there are so few CS women at any single institution it is important
to reach out to each other.

Our mission:

Today, it is a sad reality that women in computer science are a
minority, especially at the undergraduate level. It is time for that
reality to change, and that is what led to the creation of WeCAn. It is
our goal to form a support system for all female computer scientists,
starting at the institution level.

Our goals:

* Arrange workshops, field trips, and open houses that give women the
chance to get more information about computer science and all the
  fields associated with it.

* Provide opportunities to collaborate with WeCAn members from other
institutions as well as professional organizations such as ACM.

* Provide access to conferences such as the Grace Hopper Celebration
of Women in Computing, which give members an opportunity to meet
with other successful women in industry.

* Offer mentoring to underclassmen to help them through difficult
courses or any other problems they might face in the classroom.

Ultimately we want to give women support, confidence, motivation, and
inspiration in order for them to be able to fulfill their dream to
pursue a career in any field related to computer science.
