Departmental Colloquium
Prof. Chunming Rong
Director
Center of IP-based Services Innovation (CIPSI)
University of Stavanger
Stavanger
Norway
“Cloud” is a common metaphor for an Internet-accessible infrastructure
(e.g. data storage and computing hardware) which is hidden from users.
Cloud Computing makes data truly mobile, allowing a user to simply
access a chosen cloud with any Internet-accessible device. In Cloud
Computing, IT-related capabilities are provided as services, accessible
without requiring detailed knowledge of the underlying technology. Thus,
many mature technologies are used as components in Cloud Computing, but
still there are many unresolved and open problems. The Cloud Computing
Association aims to bring together researchers who work on cloud
computing and related technologies. This presentation will give an
overview of cloud computing and discuss several contemporary applications.
About the Speaker: Prof. Chunming Rong received his Ph.D. degree in
Computer Science from the University of Bergen in Norway in 1998. He is
a professor and director of the Center of IP-based Services Development
and Innovation (CIPSI) at the University of Stavanger. Currently, he is
a visiting professor at Stanford University. Between 2005 and 2009, he
also served as an adjunct professor at the University of Oslo. His
research interests include security and privacy, scalable and
data-intensive computing, and mobile computing. He is founder and
chairman of the Cloud Computing Association (CloudCom) and its
associated conference and workshop series.
