In recent years, biometric-based authentication systems have been widely 
used in many applications which require a reliable 
verification/identification scheme. A biometric system is essentially a 
pattern-recognition system that recognizes a person based on a feature 
vector derived from a specific physiological or behavioral 
characteristic the person possesses. It differs from a classical user 
authentication system, which is based on something that one has (e.g., 
identification card, key) and/or something that one knows (e.g., 
password, PIN). The biometric modality data usually includes 
fingerprints, face, voice, iris, veins, etc. In this talk, we will 
introduce the basic idea of a multimodal biometric system, fusion 
technology, and finally will present a practical multimodal biometric 

About the Speaker: Shi-Jinn Horng received the B.S. degree in 
electronics engineering from the National Taiwan Institute of 
Technology, the M.S. degree in information engineering from the National 
Central University, and the Ph.D. degree in computer science from the 
National Tsing Hua University in 1980, 1984, and 1989, respectively. He 
was a professor and dean of the College of Electrical Engineering and 
Computer Science, National United University, Miaoli, Taiwan, from 2006 
to 2009. Currently, he is a professor in the Department of Computer 
Science and Information Engineering, National Taiwan University of 
Science and Technology. He has published more than 190 research papers 
and received many awards, including the Distinguished Research Award 
between 2004 and 2006 from the National Science Council in Taiwan, the 
Outstanding IT Elite Award in 2005, the Outstanding EE Professor Award 
from the Chinese Institute of Electrical Engineering, and the 
Outstanding Research and Invention Award between 2006 and 2008 from the 
National Taiwan University of Science and Technology. He was also 
promoted to the Chair professor in National United University in 2008. 
His research interests include information security, VLSI design, 
multiprocessing systems, and parallel algorithms.
