For undergraduates, it can potentially be a summer intern project thereafter.
Here is the short bio of two speakers:
(1) John Steward is a faculty member in the GSU School of Public Health. He serves as the program manager for the Partnership for Urban Health Research and is the Director of the Administrative Core in the Center of Excellence on Health Disparities Research.
His expertise is in environmental health and urban health. He previously worked at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta for 20 years as a scientist and manager. He also worked for the Indian Health Service in the western United States prior to moving to Atlanta.
(2) Tim Callahan is the Evaluation & Support Program Director of Environmental Health Section, Georgia Department of Public Health. He manages the contract and administration of the Environmental Health Information Systems (EHIS) of Georgia. The primary system covers 144 of the 159 Georgia counties. Secondary systems cover all 159 counties.
These systems are for onsite wastewater management, food service sanitation, public swimming pools, tourist accommodation, water wells, animal bite and rabies investigations, risk assessments of homes, and general environmental health related complaints. He received MPH from Augusta University, and is Nominee for Balderson Public Health Leadership award (2010), Environmental Public Health Leadership Institute Fellow, CDC (2009), Georgia Public Health Association Environmentalist of the Year (2013), Certified Healthy Homes Specialist. His EH Experience includes 6 years US Army (Ft. Benning GA, Ft. Greely AK, Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, Washington D.C.), 12 Years County Environmental Health Specialist, Hall County, and 9 Years Program Director – Current
Mr. Callahan will speak about the various activities that fall under the career field of environmental health, including the areas that fall under GDPH authority, and other areas, such as industrial hygiene, vector control, and outreach efforts for the public’s self-protection. He will also show the current public access points to the GDPH data so as to explore the opportunities available for technological solutions.
