Large-scale Spatial Temporal Data Driven Simulation for Wildfire 
Management  towards an interdisciplinary research and education agenda

Abstract
The recent occurrence of catastrophic wildfires has highlighted the serious threat posed by fires to communities and ecosystems throughout the world. The complexity of wildfire management arises from the dynamic interactions and dependencies among multiple system components, including wildfire behavior and weather prediction, real time data assimilation, and firefighting resource management. To achieve effective wildfire containment, decision-making support tools that integrate all these components are needed. In this talk, I will present a large-scale spatial temporal data driven simulation system within an integrated simulation, optimization, and data assimilation framework for wildfire management. This system uses probabilistic techniques to continually assimilate real time sensor data into wildfire simulations for better analysis and prediction of wildfire behavior. The research challenges related to large-scale spatial temporal data driven simulation will be presented and demonstrations of wildfire simulations will be provided. This talk intends to foster collaborations towards interdisciplinary research and education by making connections with other research fields, such as operations research, meteorology, geosciences, high performance computing, and sensors and sensor network.

About the Speaker: Dr. Xiaolin Hu is an Assistant Professor in the Computer Science Department at Georgia State University, Atlanta, Georgia. He received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Arizona, M.S. degree from Chinese Academy of Sciences, and B.S. degree from Beijing Institute of Technology in 2004, 1999, and 1996 respectively. His research interests include modeling and simulation theory and application, agent and multi-agent systems, and complexity science. He has served as program chairs for several international conferences/symposiums in the field of modeling and simulation, and is an associate editor for Simulation: Transaction of The Society for Modeling and Simulation International. Dr. Hu is a National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award recipient.
