We at the Department of Anthropology condemn the murders of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Rayshard Brooks, and countless others whose deaths are the toll of systemic racism, marginalization and injustice. We stand in solidarity with Black Lives Matter and those fighting for justice everywhere, particularly our students and colleagues. As anthropologists, we are committed broadly to illuminating legacies of racism, colonialism, and imperialism—even as we recognize that as institutions, universities like our own produce not only meaningful tools for social change but also seemingly intractable forms of social injustice. Our message today is brief, as this is a time to listen and act: We commit our collective voice to amplifying the voices of Black and indigenous people and people of color who call for substantive change and offer real solutions, within and beyond Georgia State. We re-commit ourselves to anti-racist pedagogies and actions.
