Dear students,
This message is for any student who will be employed as a graduate assistant this Fall, whether in our department or elsewhere, and pertains to tuition waivers, GAships, and student loans: last year we had a problem for several students where they were awarded a larger amount of student loan money, but then their GAship was processed after that award. Then the financial aid department contacted them and said they were no longer eligible for that larger amount (and it was a considerable difference). I don’t know why it is arranged this way (why financial aid is processed before GAships), and I have no control over it, but I thought I should warn you. So if you have been awarded financial aid and a GA position, I suggest reaching out to financial aid and asking them directly about this.
Take care,
Dr. Black
