Dear Student:

My colleagues (Dr. Geoff LaFlair. Nicole Ziegler and I in the Department of Second Language Studies at the University of Hawai'i at Mânoa, in collaboration with Dr. Ute Römer in the Department of Applied Linguistics and ESL at Georgia State University, are working on a project that is funded by the TOEFL Committee of Examiners Research Grants.

Both instructors and students can earn $10 gift cards to Starbucks or Amazon by contributing some of the texts that are used (e.g., videos, readings, tutorials) or produced (e.g., blog posts, discussion posts, etc.) in the technology-mediated portions of your courses (e.g., using Laulima, iCollege, or Google Classroom).

The purpose of our project is to determine the degree to which the type(s) of language that is commonly used in technology mediated learning environments such as Laulima, iCollege, and Google Classroom is similar to/different from the language commonly used in traditional classrooms. This research will help inform the development of academic English proficiency assessment tools such as the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

A more detailed summary of this project can be found at our project website<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.hawaii.edu%2Fsls%2Ftmle-corpus-project%2F&data=02%7C01%7C%7C9ff2df89c7414091b5d308d62ec1661e%7C515ad73d8d5e4169895c9789dc742a70%7C0%7C0%7C636747805496983368&sdata=hJfGiEjWZVlKUVdkWx4RJyreJgURgASGWtFW1C3ErIM%3D&reserved=0>, where you can also find our IRB approval letter<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.hawaii.edu%2Fsls%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2018%2F08%2FApprovalLetter-IRB2018-00476_corpus_collection.pdf&data=02%7C01%7C%7C9ff2df89c7414091b5d308d62ec1661e%7C515ad73d8d5e4169895c9789dc742a70%7C0%7C0%7C636747805496983368&sdata=%2BdtHeGkL16xlBkJY%2B3RXhnJme3w6tE%2F2vq5NdkDKO1Y%3D&reserved=0>.
